Muslim inmates in Florida seek halal meals

According to an Associated Press article published for The San Francisco Chronicle, Muslim inmates in Florida have “ask[ed] to join a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Jewish prisoners demanding that the state Department of Corrections provide kosher meals.” Attorneys for the Muslim prisoners say their clients have been unable to get halal meals, which are prepared by Islamic law, and are also willing to accept the kosher diet “as an alternative.” While prison officials have re-established a kosher meals program, federal officials are demanding a court order “to guarantee [that] it stays in place.”
